Introductory video
This video is under 7 minutes long and introduces the key concepts of the Cohorts page in Insight for SEN2. Or read on for more (written) info.
Insight SEN2 - Introduction
Insight SEN2 offers the user analysis of the large volumes of data available within Nexus specifically linked to the SEN2 cohort specified in the SEN2 Census. It is designed to easily summarise, visualise and contextualise it for the user - reducing the need to spend lots of time looking at tables of numbers and potentially overlooking key information.
The strengths of this area of Nexus are that users don't need to have experience working with data and understanding the measures inside-out to access and understand the summaries presented. This allows an officer responsible for children included in the SEN2 data to understand their area's strengths, challenges, trends and comparisons with just a few short minutes of review - including comparisons to national, regional and statistical neighbours.
Downloads available from both Insight SEN2 and the Keypas Tree View provide summarised data, drawn direct from the SEN2, that has been summarised and made easier to work with and can be useful for LA users needing to undertake external analysis. For example, many users made use of these areas to support their work on SEN Reforms in 2026.
For now, SEN2 has only been developed as a Cohort page. It is anticipated that over time more functionality will be added across Insight for SEN2 and NCER would like to understand from Local Authorities what else they might find useful. Please contact us at feedback@ncer.org with any suggestions.
Since the pupil-level data collection that started in 2023, we have worked hard to help users understand the analysis on the Cohort page. Here is a summary of the different help features available.
Please note that SEN2 permissions need to be switched on for all current users by the LA Nexus admin. Once the permission has been given, the user will need to log out and back in again to see the SEN2 functionality in Nexus.
Help - SEN2 Cohort Page
At the top of the page, on the right-hand side, is an 'ABOUT THIS PAGE' button. Here you will find some useful information about the page, including data suppression and links to useful pages in the Nexus help guide.
Users will find more help across the page where there is an 'i' button available; click on the 'i', and a pop-up will give you some useful information for the area you're looking at and useful links to help pages where available.
Please note, Cohort pages do not have print buttons; however, if you need to print any charts to support a meeting or other event, users can screenshot the relevant parts of the page. If you are doing this for someone else in your LA, consider giving them access to SEN2 in Insight instead.
Finally, don't forget about the Nexus forum. There is a specific section for SEN2 for LA users to discuss SEN2 in Nexus (or for any other SEN2 discussion that is helpful.)
SEN2 permissions and pupil level access
Permissions to access the SEN2 analysis in Insight are set within the Admin menu in the Users area by users with the Can Add, Delete and Manage users permission.
Privileges Tab
To access the Privileges tab for a user, hover over Admin, click Users, select the relevant user and then click the Privileges tab.
Assigning the pupil level permission for Insight will result in the user being required to set up and use Two Factor Authentication to access Nexus. The guide for 2FA in Nexus is here.
